Sam? Samwise Gamgee?

... What an awful mistake I've made. Things all went black, and a sharp pain filled me, deep in my back and heart and encompassed me whole. This place, it isn't the place I left. This is not the tunnel, not even the mountain pass.

This strange book, and these strange wings... what has happened to me? More aches, pains unfamiliar, are stuck in me, now. They run not as deep, but are strong enough for remembering. My task... no guide, no companion, my Sam... not even the voice in my head to give me any guide. The weight of the eye is gone, but now what am I to do?

Sam, oh Sam, I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry...

Well, I know the wings can ache quite a bit, especially that first day. It's rare that we get new arrivals who are actually injured...but I wouldn't put it past our captors.

The wings... how did they get there?

The Malnosso -the scientists who have us trapped in this realm- put them there. They're both a translator and a lifeline. You want to make sure they're not harmed at all costs.

[ Science? That is not something even remotely familiar to those of Middle Earth, let alone the Shire. ]

A kind of magic, then?

Sort of, but not one I understand well. It's nothing like mine.

Do you need help being guided to town? I wouldn't want to see you lost.

It sounds like you've traveled quite a bit in the name of your task. I'm sorry that will be postponed, but perhaps a break will do you good.

So long as you all speak the truth about the passing of time... it... I feel it would be good for me, right now. I wish that my companion were here. I feel he needs a time to rest far more than I do.

Well, it's possible that he might join you. When I first arrived, there were already several familiar faces from home. Mine isn't a unique case, either.

I know it may be selfishness, given the nature of this place, if I am to be understanding it right, but... I also know Sam would not be happy if I have gone somewhere without him. So, I'll keep hope.

Sam...does he have a last name?

[ He is... very wary, but he has this feeling saying Sam's name won't put him in jeopardy, so long as they don't know of Frodo himself. ]

... [ He hesitates a long while, considering it. Should he give his name? If he gives his name, he risks recognition and capture. If he doesn't and Sam or the others arrive, they may not find out he is here when they hunt for information.

If they are telling the truth, there is no Sauron to bring the ring to. But, it still has its power and its seductive calling.

So what does he do? It all seems hopeless, and if he cannot even be Frodo here, if he is to 'rest' here, then his hopelessness is justified for certain. ]
